COURSE TOPICS

This course includes an examination covering subjects in which the individual must have training for licensure as an unarmed security officer in Tennessee. In accordance with requirements under Tenn. Code Ann. § 62-35-118 all candidates must complete a 4-Hour General Training course including:
(1) Hour Orientation
(1) Hour Legal Powers and Limitations of a Security Guard/Officer
(1) Hour Emergency Procedures

• Comprehend the desired behaviors and conduct of security personnel in the workplace.
• Comprehend the Tennessee Laws (state statutes) governing Private Protective Services that administer armed and unarmed security personnel.
• Understand the purpose and regulations outlined in the Tennessee Private Protective Services Licensing and Regulatory Act and Administrative Rules - Rule 0780-05-02, which are crucial for security personnel.
• Comprehend the Tennessee Laws (state statutes) for criminal and civil laws and liabilities about Title 39 (Criminal Offenses) and Title 40 (Criminal Procedure) and their importance to security personnel.
• Comprehend basic first aid techniques and related safety and legal considerations for administering first aid.
• Comprehend the general evacuation and notification procedures used when responding to emergencies.
• Comprehend the basic principles of effective foot and vehicle patrols and how situational awareness and defensive driving aid the security officer in these duties.

RENEWALS

• Unarmed Guards/Officers renew registration every two (2) years.
• Unarmed security guards must complete two hours of refresher training every two (2) years and pass a multiple-choice test with a minimum score of 70% before renewing their guard registration.

LATE RENEWAL TIME PERIOD

• A 90-day late renewal period is available for license renewal.
• Unarmed security officers can renew during this time but cannot work with an expired license.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS TENNESSEE UNARMED GUARD QUALIFICATIONS

Age: Must be at least 18 years old.
Citizenship: Must be a U.S. citizen or resident alien.
Character: Must be of good moral character:

• No convictions for serious crimes (including probation) within the past 5 years.
• No convictions for crimes involving firearms, shoplifting, or violence within the past 5 years.

Physical and Mental Fitness: Free from disabilities that prevent performing duties.

• Not suffering from habitual drunkenness or drug addiction.
• Not declared incompetent by a court (unless competency has since been restored).

CONVICTION OF THE FOLLOWING OFFENSES SHALL DISQUALIFY AN APPLICANT

ANY FELONY

ANY MISDEMEANOR INVOLVING:

• Shooting a firearm or other weapon
• Shoplifting
• Assault and battery or other act of violence against persons or property
• Crimes involving the sale, manufacture, or distribution of controlled substances, controlled substance analogs, drugs, or narcotics;
• Theft of property
• Theft of services

• Must meet the training requirements.
• Submit electronic fingerprints for processing TBI and/or FBI criminal history checks.
